Nicotine and Cotinine Assays
We have many years experience of assaying nicotine and cotinine in saliva, plasma and urine. We have supported various studies investigating smoking status and tobacco smoke exposure in adults and children. Our assay is sensitive enough to give a measure of passive smoke exposure. Do a literature search for any one of the following names to see the type of research we have supported: C. Feyerabend, M. A. H. Russell, M. Jarvis & R. West.
At ABS we offer:

High throughput assays suitable for epidemiological studies
Telephone support for sample enquiry
Reporting of Study Data

A 3 hour turn-around time if required on selected samples
Fully validated method for nicotine and its metabolite, cotinine in plasma, saliva and urine |
The measurement of nicotine and cotinine is performed using capillary Gas Chromatography with NPD detection (J. Pharm. Pharmacol. 1990, 42: 450-452. We use 100 µL of sample and the assay has a detection limit of 0.1 ng/mL. This method has supported :
Efficacy and bio-equivalence studies of nicotine formulations such as nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, nasal sprays and non-burning cigarettes.
Studies on passive smoking and it's effects on health, eg. childhood diseases such as glue ear asthma etc. and foetal development.
Support to Smoking Cessation programmes, as questionnaires can not be trusted.
Large epidemiological studies investigating smoking and its effects on a variety of health and sociological issues.
Pharmacokinetic studies and stability studies. We have results that demonstrate saliva levels parallel plasma levels, and that samples are stable at room temperature for up to 12 days. This means samples can be sent by post.

Recruitment screening for clinical trials as smokers can ruin clinical trials (Aspeloff et al 1994 Clin Pharm & Therapy, 56, 460-2.).

Smoking Cessation Support in clinics and the workplace. |
